A fully obedience-trained service puppy (6 months and older) has been carefully selected, trained and has undergone extensive socialization by Dog Training Elite Lowcountry. Additional training will be required once the puppy is placed to complete the specialized service dog training. What is the difference between reactivity a

d aggression in dogs? dog reactivity involves out-of-proportion emotional arousal, and aggression involves conflict and harm. But is there any relationship between the two behaviors? Yes. Reactive dogs can become aggressive depending on the situation and past experience.

Behavior modification training for dogs involves:

Desensitization: the process of intentionally exposing your dog to an event or trigger in a controlled, limited way.

Counter-conditioning: the process of changing your dog’s emotional response toward a stimulus.

Behavior modification is the process of training your dog to stop unwanted behaviors, by reinforcing positive behavior.

This behavior occurs when a reactive dog sees something that they want to look at but can’t because there is an obstacle in their way. This can occur in the home or on the leash outside. When a dog is experiencing barrier frustration, they may exhibit the following behaviors.

• Barking

• Lunging at the barrier

• Pulling on the leash

• Snapping

Sometimes barrier frustration can be triggered by a reactive dog spending too much time in a crate and lacking exercise. While most dogs may get antsy when they are deprived of exercise, reactive dogs may exhibit excessive frustration behaviors.

Another type of reactive behavior is fear-based. When a dog is fearful, they will react by

baring teeth,

growling, and

barking.

A reactive dog usually does not want to attack, nor be attacked and this is why they exhibit protective and aggressive behaviors. Think of it as a rattlesnake shaking its tail when a person gets too close.

Some dogs exhibit reactive behavior because of stimuli they see that have given them a negative experience in the past.

For example, they may associate seeing another dog with a jerk on the leash and that creates a negative stimuli experience. Over time, this will lead to an escalation in reactive behavior.

A therapy dog volunteers alongside you, where permitted, and provides comfort to others. Examples include cheering people up at nursing homes or hospitals.

A good therapy dog is naturally friendly with strangers, able to work around a high level of distraction (with training), and able to understand personal boundaries, such as not jumping up, licking, mouthing, etc. (with training).
